Since last Thursday I’ve been working around 12 hours per day with school work. But before I start with my story I will say that this is not a complaint about how harsh it was these days. Of course it wasn’t directly a walk in the park when I spent 15 hours working some days and was sick in flu… What I will talk about is instead what I have learned from this, and how to try avoid it for next time—I have never worked this much before ever, and I never want to do that again. This is more of note to myself than to anyone else, I don’t know what I have learned yet since I haven’t had the time to dwell upon that. To do that I need to give you some background story.

It started of with a course that ended late because of the teachers, meaning we needed to work with the final assignment in the same week the two other courses started. This would naturally be fine and it actually was, almost. I did not start working on it directly on the Monday, but on Tuesday and I had to be done by Thursday around 12, although the deadline was Friday night. This was because I went home with my girlfriend to visit my mom, and I did not want to change the date since we had planned things; I did not finish the assignment in time for Thursday but worked on the Train home, and then read through it one last time on Friday before sending it in, nothing too stressful. This however prohibited me for starting to work enough on the other ‘project’ course (since only one had assignment this week).

The next week I had to fix some things for the project course for Wednesday, and I just made it in time (but only working 6-8 hours per day). After this day is when the final workload just increase by 100%. For the second started course—the research course—we had our deadline for the assignment on Monday morning, meaning we had 5 days to complete it which was to find, read, compare some papers, not a very difficult task but it takes some time and of course I did the planning for when to do what in our group—I love planning so I don’t mind :D Anyway in total I maybe worked around 14 hours on this task. It was the fact that I needed to find a management system for the project course, or I did not need to do it but I was the most experienced with management systems, thus I accepted the task, and I knew that it was only me of the two producers that could do this. First I searched, tested one management system (although this is more ticket/bug report system) and then got back to Trac which is the system I usually am using. Now I had to do a lot of things, first I needed to setup three Trac pages—not that difficult since I have created a script for that—but there were some new plugins that we needed to use which I needed to fix. Next I was required to create two tutorials for the system, but first I had to learn the system myself…

This would still be quite easy and not too much work although there were some problems that occurred. Maybe it would require more than 8 hours per day (including the weekend days), but manageable. OK, this time it’s the real problem I promise… I got sick and had a fever on Sunday–Wednesday; although I got sick at Friday night, it wasn’t a problem until Sunday when the fever hit me. On Sunday I only worked for 6 inefficient hours—I had to go to bed after working around 2 hours since I did not have enough strength to work. This really messed things up—the sickness—because I had calculated that I would have enough time to work on everything with quite a marginal. But due to the fever I could not work efficiently and this resulted in working 15 hours on Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday the storm has passed and everything went back to almost normal, except I still had some symptoms of the flu…

Conclusion
My conclusions from this is that I would want to avoid this again at all costs; so what could I have done instead—where ‘not getting sick’ isn’t an option. One obvious thing is to start with the assignments immediately, this would have solved some things at least. Another thing is that I tend to take too much responsibility for things, which could be good, but not when you are supposed to work in a group. It is because I have worked with people that don’t want to work or cannot do the task I assign, which caused me to fix things on my own in the last minute; so I’d rather do that myself from the start now; what I think I need to do is starting to trust people more, at least I will do that in work since then almost everyone is serious about his work at least. The third point I can think of now is that I’m too much of a perfectionist, I want everything to be done perfectly which I should really let go of. I want everything in too much detail, as of some days later I got an email from a friend saying their group weren’t going to use the system and I actually think they shouldn’t, so some of my work has been in vain, or at least not all; my group will still use it but I think I will use it in another way now; and if I didn’t setup the system I would never have learned this other way… I think that if I have the time before the next project I start up for a group I will thoroughly try to evaluate what management methods we should use, and try to make it too simple.

As a last thing I noticed that I am capable of really working a lot, I will keep this in mind—although it was because of the deadlines and the stress (stress should be counter-productive?) it has actually been proved that you work less efficiently during stress and a close deadline, but deadlines per se is a great way to get things done, as long as you don’t procrastinate.

If you have read through this I hope that I have maybe helped someone else from not falling into the same trap as me, and that you enjoyed the reading. If not, why are you still reading! Have a nice day!

The first thing I thought when I was heading home to my family in Småland was that I finally could get some rest. But nay, I have school work that needs to be done (that I haven’t really worked on), the need to train on the piano, and another thing which I won’t mention here :P All these things were constantly in my mind, so I couldn’t relax thoroughly. But at least I’ve met a lot of old friends, and I will meet more on New Year’s Eve :D . So not everything is bad, and hell I can actually play Valse d’Amélie quite good although I haven’t trained that much. However tomorrow I have a “free” day then I can work as much as I want with the school project :)

Oh not to forget, I’ve gotten two massage sessions in one week and that was really nice.

That’s all for my status update this time.

Last Sunday I was one of those who played at the Piano Christmas Concert that my piano teacher had arranged for her students, and herself; although she only played two pieces. I played four pieces,1) Amelie from Montmartre – Comptine d’un autre ètè; 2) Schubert – Military March; 3) Chopin – Raindrop Prelude; and 4) Final Fantasy VII – Terra’s Theme. I didn’t have enough time to prepare for the Military March so I didn’t play that piece that good, not compared to the others. In the other pieces I just made some minor mistakes like accelerating in the difficult part of Amelie and some notes were played softer or louder than they should have been. But overall I’m satisfied with the whole concert :)

Of to school, there has been a lot of things to do lately, 2 assignment, 1 project, 1 piano concert and I was stressed the whole week. Actually I was too stressed one day to do anything, or at least I played some piano :P But now both assignments are done so I only have to focus on the project.

Anyway about the assignments; we were supposed to study a software system and identify breakdowns when a user interacts with it. We (me and my partner) chose Google Docs. We used an ethnographic approach to find out the breakdowns, more specific we used contextual inquiry and a kind of semi-informal interviews.

To make things short, we gave the four users in groups of two a scenario (a document that was printed out) and let them collaborate to recreate the document. We then asked some questions (semi-informal interview).

Our conclusion was that the users had a hard time finding and using features they never or rarely used. Some of these include: headings (which is a really good feature, use this if you are using Google Docs), table of contents, and footnote.

Well, that’s all from me, maybe I’ll do some updating during the Christmas holidays.

I’ve been feeling good the last couple of days now, i.e. my mood is not going up ‘n down. I’ve had two days which “little” work to do, and thus I’ve been able to relax a bit and do nothing really. And just for about an hour ago I got to know that an old friend is coming and visiting us here in Blekinge :) . That’s it for the status report now onto school

I’m currently reading two HCI (Human Computer Interaction) courses in my course, actually we’ve had 4 courses and 3 of them have been about HCI. For the two courses I have now, one is less interesting and one is kinda more interesting and that is HCI in games. We have some different kind of equipment here for us to use.

  • Arduino Basically it’s just an interface for creating different components for the computer. It’s easier to describe with examples: Racing cars controlled by radio remote control, game controller, lamps switching on when there is some movement in the room, alarms, etc.
  • Eye-tracker Tracks where on the screen you’re looking. This could be integrated with other software, like games, but I think it’s usually used for testing the design of web pages; i.e. if people look where they are supposed etc.
  • EMG (electromyograph) Depending on where you place the sensors you can use it for different things. For measuring emotions it’s usually placed on the face, it could also be placed on the arms to control something with the hand just by doing actions in the air.
  • GSR (Galvanic Skin Response) Measures the resistance between two points. So what’s that good for? Well it measures how aroused you are, because the more aroused you are the more you’re sweating, thus less resistance. It can be used as a lie detector, but in games it could be used to enhance the game play. Think of a sneaking game and the more aroused (read less calm) the harder it is to hide from enemies; or if it’s a shooter the crosshair could start shaking, and maybe you get paralyzed by some degree in horror games. Although there is some seconds of delay, so this needs to be accounted for.
  • EEG (electroencephalograph) Read the mind, well not exactly but measures brain waves. It’s mainly used in hospitals, but in the area of games it is used to control some gaming elements with the help of the mind. It’s not that accurate and needs training before you can use it. Thus it’s like not feasible to have like a whole game only controlled by it, unless it’s a very simple game. Because usually people give more than one command at the same time and differencing pattern could then be hard.

Anyway we’re going to make a simple prototype using one of the equipments here. It’ll be fun to see what we’re able to do and what the others are able to accomplish (we’re three groups of three people). There will be another update when we’re done with the game. Too bad we can’t just share the game and have people test it, for you to use it you’ll need the equipment we use and some of those are kinda expensive.

So it’s been a while since the last time (how many bloggers doesn’t say this?)

Anyway a lot has happened to me and I’ve learned a great deal of things. Next will be a short summary of the events of the last month approximately.

So I started my Master in Design, Interaction and Game Technologies. The first course being an actual introduction to the field and second one (running along with the first course) is an introduction to Strategic Sustainable Development (called SSD by me). Overall the course is how bad the earth is going to be if we don’t do anything about it, and even if we do it will still have a major impact. Many think okay the CO2 is going up, actually it’s skyrocketing, but anyway it have never been this high in the latest 400 000 years. Where does this make us stand, we’ll the global temperature is estimated to increase by 2–4 degrees Celsius (somewhat) from today until 2050. Source: 4th IPCC report. How is this bad then? In a global temperature increase by 2–4 degrees doesn’t mean that all places get such a increment some might get as high as 8–10 degrees Celsius increment. If you also think about it, an Ice Age lasts if there is about 3 degrees lower than today’s average temperature so what happens when we get an increment by 3 degrees? Earth haven’t been exposed to such a state yet so we can only speculate and that is not easy in such a complex system as the earth.

So what can we do about it? We need to lower our emissions. How do we do that? These are some of the questions answered. I will not write a thorough report on this because there are so much better reports on these. Holmberg and Robert 2000 – Backcasting from non-overlapping gives a brief introduction to some of the concepts.

On to the next topic I ran the so called BTH-ruset (BTH-rush). It said it was a 6km running race but was in fact more about 5.3km or so. I think I came in 84 of about 200 people? So I’m doing a bit success in my running although I can certainly tell that this was far from my best performance, clocked in on around 30 minutes.

I’ve also bought some running music with coaching and I love them. One for pyramid interval training and one for regular running with a higher tempo towards the middle. The music can be found here: http://shop.endomondo.com/collections/audiofuel

The previous Saturday I was decided to go and swim with my friends that visit the swimming pool (is it really called that in English?). This was the first time I did swim proper for about 5 years and I was surprised that it actually wasn’t that difficult to swim more than 1000m that I remember. Took 50 minutes to swim around 1300m or I think it was 50 minutes could’ve been less.

To the last topic now then. About a week ago I helped my sister moving and accidentally tripped with a furniture on bed with no mattress on it. Landed on my chin but there wasn’t any serious damage except for my thumb that I discovered later that same day. Didn’t feel anything in it after I fell so I haven’t been able to play the piano for some time now and it still hurts a little sometimes, but I’ll go to my piano lesson tomorrow and see how it goes. I think I’ll take it easy on playing the piano until the pain has gone away thoroughly, not to make it worse because then I might need to wait for one month before playing again and I don’t want that.
